The ABC of Biometrics Dynamism

0 Shares

Research has proven that fraudsters often exploit the predictability of systems and processes to perpetrate their schemes, by meticulously studying & analyzing patterns to develop sophisticated methods of creating convincing look-alikes to bypass security measures; and the science of Biometrics Dynamism aims to counteract this by integrating dynamic, changing elements into biometric systems, enhancing security and accuracy.

The Problem with Predictability

Research consistently demonstrates the risks associated with predictable systems, and according to;

  • Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE – 2022, 42% of fraud cases involve misappropriations that mimic legitimate transactions.
  • Federal Trade Commission (FTC), identity theft affecting 1.4 million people in 2021, often exploits predictable human behaviors through social engineering tactics
  • IBM (2022), 33% increase in incidents where attackers mimicked legitimate user behavior to gain unauthorized access by analyzing system vulnerabilities
  • Javelin Strategy & Research (2022), Indicated a 15% rise in account takeover fraud due to the predictability of financial processes.

Biometrics Dynamism

Traditional biometric systems, like fingerprint or iris recognition, rely on static data points that remain constant over time and also offer convenience and ease of use over-time, making it vulnerable to fraud due to its predictability.

Biometrics dynamism, on the other hand, incorporates aspects that can change and introduce dynamic and randomized elements, significantly enhancing security by making it harder for fraudsters to predict and replicate the verification process or bypass the system. This approach ensures a more secure and reliable authentication system, crucial for protecting sensitive information and combating sophisticated fraud attempts.

A study by Javelin Strategy & Research found that incorporating dynamic biometrics into security protocols can reduce fraud incidents by up to 50%.

Leveraging the unique physiological and behavioral characteristics of individuals, helps adapt and respond to changing conditions of fraudulent activities, flagging them in real-time. From fingerprints to facial recognition and sophisticated methods of analyzing gestures and other behavioral patterns — all are employed in a bid to enhance security measures.

In line with our commitment to staying ahead of trends to keep you up to date with progressive & innovative technology that serves you security wise, we have added Biometrics Dynamism as an extra level of security to your checks; which is available via our Mobile SDKs and can be set up for verification with Identitypass or Identityradar.

With our Biometric dynamism, we are leading the fort in the biometric authentication space where there is a combination of different attributes to onboard your customers through their facial peculiarities.  The attributes will be displayed randomly in no order and the user will only be able to proceed to the next attributes if the previous one was passed.

Our dynamic biometric technology is actively combating the growing threat of deepfakes. According to;

The Asia-Pacific region experienced a 1530% surge in deepfake cases from 2022 to 2023 where;

  • 70% of people unable to differentiate between a real and a cloned voice

In 2024, advancements in deepfake detection for KYC processes are expected to be driven by a combination of machine learning technologies, behavioral anti-fraud measures, transaction monitoring, and stronger biometric verification methods. The evolution of deepfake detection techniques will be moving in several ways:

  • Transition from one-time deepfake checks to continuous identity verification via passive liveness detection. This enables persistent authentication.
  • Evolution of detection tools to go beyond analyzing isolated imagery/video/audio to instead evaluate context, environmental factors, and cross-referenced information. This can reveal inconsistencies.

At Prembly, we pride ourselves on our dedication to providing our customers with the highest standard of verification services. Our strategy for combating the sophisticated challenge of deepfakes revolves around an advanced multi-modal biometric authentication framework, designed to authenticate user identities with unparalleled accuracy and robust defense against spoofing and impersonation attempts. Here’s a deeper look into each component of our authentication system:

  • Blink Detection: Our system’s blink detection capability is at the forefront of our defense against deepfakes. We analyze the user’s eye movements meticulously in real-time by utilizing advanced computer vision algorithms. The technology is so refined that it can detect the natural blinking pattern of an individual, which is a vital human trait that is difficult for deepfakes to convincingly replicate. This blink detection is not just about recognizing a blink but understanding the cadence and frequency, which helps in distinguishing a live person from a sophisticated prerecorded or computer-generated video feed, a method commonly employed in deepfake attacks.
  • Gesture Recognition: Moving beyond just the eyes, our system engages users in a dynamic interaction through gesture recognition. Users are prompted to perform specific, sometimes randomized hand gestures, which are then analyzed by our system. This process involves complex algorithms that can interpret a wide range of movements, offering an interactive layer of security. The gestures are designed to be simple for the user but complex enough in variation to thwart attempts at replication by deepfake technologies, ensuring that the person verified is present and performing the actions in real-time.

  • Iris Recognition: Our iris recognition technology leverages the power of deep learning to perform detailed scans of the user’s iris. Each iris is unique, with intricate patterns that are nearly impossible to forge, making it an ideal candidate for secure biometric identification. Our system analyzes these patterns to create a distinctive biometric profile for each user. This process not only adds a layer of defense but also contributes to the system’s resilience against deepfake penetration, as replicating the unique iris patterns with high fidelity in a generated image or video is currently beyond the reach of deepfake technology.
  • Voice ID: To further ensure the authenticity of the user’s identity, we incorporate Voice ID into our suite of verification tools. This involves prompting the user to speak a specific sentence, during which we perform real-time voice analysis. This analysis compares the spoken voice against the user’s previously enrolled voiceprint. Voice ID adds a crucial auditory dimension to our biometric authentication process, leveraging unique vocal characteristics that are as distinctive as a fingerprint. The complexity of human speech, including tone, pitch, and accent, combined with the spoken content, makes it exceedingly difficult for attackers to mimic or generate a matching voiceprint synthetically.

By intricately weaving together these biometric capabilities, we’ve been able to introduce a formidable challenge to perpetrators of identity fraud, particularly through deepfakes. Our approach of randomly combining these methods in no particular order for each authentication session introduces an element of unpredictability. This randomness ensures that attackers cannot pre-record a sequence of responses, significantly enhancing security and providing real-time validation with confidence.
